Hardware plus software changes the sourcing brief

Smart pet products are not a single purchase. An automatic feeder or GPS collar combines plastics, electronics, firmware, a mobile app and after-sales support. Sourcing one well means coordinating several capability sets that rarely sit in the same department of a factory.

What to define before requesting quotes

  • App ownership: who controls the firmware, the cloud account and the update path
  • Certification scope for the target market, including wireless approvals
  • Battery strategy, expected runtime and replacement path
  • Failure handling: what the device does when connectivity drops

Where projects usually slip

Most delays in this category come from software and certification, not from tooling. A factory can produce a housing quickly; the schedule is set by firmware stability, app store review and radio certification. Buyers who plan those in parallel with tooling avoid the common situation where samples are ready but cannot be shipped.

Supplier questions worth asking early

Ask which parts of the stack the factory owns and which it subcontracts, and ask to see a product already shipped to a comparable market. A supplier with a live app and an existing certification file is a fundamentally different risk from one that is quoting from a reference design.
