Why trade shows still matter in a digital sourcing process
Catalogues and video calls are efficient, but they filter out texture: how a surface feels, how a mechanism sounds, how a supplier answers a question it did not prepare for. A show compresses weeks of first-round screening into a few days.
Getting value from a show
- Define the three or four products you are actually sourcing before you travel
- Bring target prices, volumes and required certifications in writing
- Photograph samples and record the exact model reference on the spot
- Book follow-up slots with priority suppliers before the floor gets busy
Use the show as a shortlist, not a decision
An on-site conversation is a first filter. Commit to samples and a factory review afterwards, and keep the criteria identical across suppliers so the comparison is meaningful. Decisions taken on the floor, without documentation, are the ones that get re-litigated three months later.
After the show
Consolidate notes within a week, request quotations against the same specification, and schedule sample evaluation dates. Suppliers who respond with structured documentation in that window are showing you how they will behave during production.
